The New PT's Guide to Cancer

Course Description:

This is a live, virtual 2-hr course designed to introduce novice/beginner physical therapists & physical therapist assistants in the basics of how cancer & cancer treatment affects a person. Special emphasis will be placed on the broad side effects & impairments patients experience as a result of cancer & its treatment & will include a brief case review of short-term & long-term side effects & impairments.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, participants will demonstrate competency in the following objectives:

1. Describe cancer & how it can affect the human body
2. Understand common cancer treatments & an overview of how cancer treatments affect the body
3. Explain long-term effects of cancer & cancer treatments on functional mobility
4. Apply knowledge gained to an example case patient

Course Schedule:

18:00-18:10: Introduction, review of course objectives, agenda, assessment scheme

18:10-18:35: Introduction of Cancer & how cancer affects a body

18:35-19:00: Discussion of Cancer Treatments & associated impairments

19:05-19:25: Long-Term Impairments & Effects of Cancer & Treatments

19:25-19:50: Case Review and Interactive Discussion

19:50-20:00: Final thoughts, question & answer, review of post-course procedures

Competency Demonstration:  

Pre-course video submitted by each student on what is keeping them from treating patients with cancer right now. (30%)

Post-course quiz (70%): In order to receive continuing education credit, each participant must achieve 70% in a quiz provided via Flexiquiz after the course. If the student fails to achieve 70 points throughout the course, they will be asked to complete additional assignments until remediation is achieved. Once the student achieves this score and completes the course evaluation, they will provided with a course certificate.
