Course Details

Course Description:  This 3-hour course will discuss the importance of the examination and assessment of the cardiovascular

and pulmonary systems for management of patients who survive COVID-19. We will discuss post-

intensive care unit syndrome (PICS), including special considerations for the patient who survived

COVID-19. Basic examination and treatment techniques, as well as adverse signs and symptoms to

monitor for, will be discussed.

Instructor:

Dr. Julie M. Skrzat, PT, DPT, PhD, CCS is an Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at

Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at Mary Baldwin University, Fishersville, VA. She earned

her BS, MS, and DPT from Ithaca College, and her PhD from Temple University. She has been an APTA

Board Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Specialist since 2015. In addition to teaching, Julie

partners with Lehigh Valley Health Network to conduct research, which focuses on optimizing patient

outcomes for those in the acute care setting. She maintains her clinical practice at a level 1 trauma center.

Julie is the owner of Dusza, LLC, a company dedicated to spreading education on cardiovascular and

pulmonary health, which she believes is the core of movement.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the course, participants will demonstrate competency in the following objectives:

1. Understand post-intensive care unit syndrome (PICS), including special considerations for the

patient who survived COVID-19.

2. Identify signs and symptoms of PICS.

3. Discuss basic cardiovascular and pulmonary examination principles, and how to structure an

exam

4. Determine the best type of cardiovascular and pulmonary treatment based on patient presentation.

Competency Demonstration:  In order to receive continuing education credit, each participant must achieve 70% in a 10-question quiz provided via Flexiquiz after the course. If the student fails to achieve 70 points throughout the course, they will be asked to complete additional assignments until remediation is achieved. Once the student achieves this score and completes the course evaluation, they will be e-mailed an official course certificate.
