Course Details

Course Description:

This is a virtual 6-hr course designed for direct access physical therapists and athletic therapists to enhance their evaluative skills in screening, differential diagnosis, assessment and management of Running athletes with acute and chronic Tendon pain. In the pre-course session, participants will review three relevant tendon specific articles. The first live course will be largely focused on evaluation and two sample cases (specifically related to the Achilles and hamstring tendon) where students will be challenged to develop differential diagnoses and most appropriate initial management strategies. The Second live section will be focused on the rehabilitation and clinical reasoning critical to effective management of tendon pain in the running athlete. This second course will expand upon principles developed in the first session and use the case examples of the gluteal and patella tendons.

CEU/CME Hours: Part 1 + Part 2 = 6 contact hours

Course Objectives:

  1. Recall 5 of the most commonly recognized Running related tendon injuries and their typical histories.
  2. Demonstrate through Q/A the relevant subjective and objective components of an examination  for patients suspected with running related tendon pain .
  3. Understand the use of quick scan safety questions in order to prioritize, where needed, further imaging, medical referral or modifications of the examination for patients with tendon pain .
  4. Demonstrate how to balance Biomechanical, functional, and pain-centered approaches.
  5. Formulate a systematic physical movement exam using the “three-legged stool” evaluation categories for quantifying strength, length, and movement control.
  6. Recognize the Tampa kinesiophobia , VISA  & other screening questionnaire tools and their role in further specific examination.
  7. Demonstrate the use of a biopsychosocial diagnosis and treatment plan by summarizing both the subjective history and physical exam in one complete narrative format.
  8. Be competent in building a simple but comprehensive program to correct deficits in strength, mobility, and movement efficiency gathered from the physical exam.
  9. Recall examples of treatment for the injured tendon, including new exercises and adjunct manual techniques for both isolated and integrated strength, mobility, and control.
  10. Identify simple and effective ways to teach corrections for movement quality dysfunctions.
  11. Demonstrate through practical examples the concepts of load capacity,
  12. Implement relevant rehabilitation programs using the concepts of neuromuscular, strength, power and plyometric conditioning.
  13. Identify the most common risk factors for tendon pain recurrence and slowed recovery.

Course Schedule:

Part 1 (Nov 6, 2021): Running Related Tendon Pain  - Achilles and Hamstring Tendons

0-15 course overview

15-30: examination principles

30- 60 rehab principles, epidemiology

60-120: examining the Achilles tendon.

120-150: case history

150-165: examining the hamstring tendon.

165-180 ; case history

Part 2 (Nov 13, 2021): Running Related Tendon Pain  - Patellar & Gluteal Tendons

0-30 review

30-60: the gluteal tendons

60-120: case history and rehab

120-150: the patella tendon

Competency Demonstration:  In order to receive continuing education credit, each participant must achieve 70% in a 10-question quiz provided via Flexiquiz after the course. If the student fails to achieve 70 points throughout the course, they will be asked to complete additional assignments until remediation is achieved. Once the student achieves this score and completes the course evaluation, they will be e-mailed an official course certificate.
