Course Details

Course Description: This is a live, virtual 3.5-hour course designed to improve your clinical toolbox with an evidence-based framework for blood flow restriction (BFR) training in the rehabilitation and/or athletic setting. Blood flow restriction training is a safe and effective technique that allows your patients and clients to achieve the same physiological adaptations associated with high intensity strength training, without the joint stress!

The session will cover a review of exercise physiology principles of strength training, current guidelines for traditional strength training, the history and science behind blood flow restriction training and the safety and efficacy for the patient and clinic. While this will not have a hands-on practical lab portion, the second half of the session will allow you to review and discuss case studies. A final Q&A session will allow participants to ask how BFR could relate specifically to their patient population.

CEU/CME Hours: 3.5

2. Understand the current guidelines for muscle hypertrophy with traditional strength training.

3. Learn “Why BFR?” if traditional strength training is effective.

4. Identify the physiological principles that support the use of BFR in the rehabilitation and athletic populations/settings.

5. Identify precautions and contraindications to use the of BFR in the clinical rehabilitation population.

6. Understand the basics of exercise prescription with BFR.

7. Apply knowledge of the safety and efficacy of BFR to student provided case studies.

8. Learn basics regarding documentation, billing, and marketing for BFR.

Course Schedule:

11-1110: Brief Introduction and review of course objectives, agenda, assessment

1110-1140: Basics of Exercise Physiology and Review of Traditional Strength Training Guidelines

1140-1230:  What is BFR? Why Should We Use it? Is it safe and effective?

1230-1250: General Guidelines for Use of BFR

1250-110:  Exercise Prescription with BFR

110-120: Documentation, Billing, and Marketing Thoughts

120-200: Student Case Studies

200-230: Q&A

Competency Demonstration: For participants completing the course for CEU credit, the course will contain the following assessments:

Pre-Course Flipgrid Introduction (20%):   Using FlipGrid, introduce yourself and provide one (1) case study that you believe would benefit from BFR

Post Course Quiz (80%)

Each student must obtain at least 70 % overall in order to pass the course. If the student fails to achieve 70 points throughout the course, they will be asked to complete additional assignments until remediation is achieved.
