In this 2-hr live, virtual course, participants will explore 2020 updates in cardiovascular function and adapation to exercise. In the course, we will review basic anatomy and physiology and then dive deep into how the heart and vessels adapt to various types of exercise, including "cardio", high intensity interval training (HIIT, resistance traning, and yoga/meditation. We will review the effects of heart rate, blood pressure and total peripheral resistance on heart function. We will also touch briefly on the effects of chronic illness on cardiovascular function. Participants will walk away having met the following objectives:

.Recall the basic macro- and micro-anatomy features of the heart, arteries, and veins

.Understand the neural circuitry and innervation of the heart

.Understand heart/pulse rate, blood pressure, & total peripheral resistance

.Understand how the heart and vessels adapt to changes in physical workload both acutely and over time

.Understand the effects of different types of exercise on cardiovascular function (resistance training, aerobic, anaerobic, meditation/yoga)

.Understand how common diseases affect the cardiovascular system (hypertension, obesity, atherosclerosis, diabetes, high cholesterol)

.Understand the effects of exercise on the aforementioned diseases

.Understand “referral” protocol for an individual with suspected or unstable symptoms
