Course Description:  This is a virtual 2-hour course designed for physical therapists to enhance their foundational knowledge in diagnostic imaging modalities. This course will be the foundation for additional head-to-toe region specific modules. The intro course focuses on a range of modalities including radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography. The course will convey the inherent statistical properties of each modality and how that impacts interpretations and clinical management. The course will instruct on radiologic verbiage to maximize the students’ ability to garner information from an interpretation and for inter-professional communication with radiologists. Students will also be taught a communication strategy with radiologists to improve the interpretation, improve the clinical correlation, and ultimately improve the management of the patient.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the course, participants will demonstrate competency in the following objectives:

a. Understand the inherent statistical properties of various diagnostic imaging modalities.

b. Understand the risks, benefits, and limitations of various imaging modalities.

c. Understand how to orient yourself to directionality (superior/lateral/right/left/etc) in various imaging modalities.

d. Understand how to interpret/use proper radiologic verbiage when discussing various imaging modalities

e. Identify structures by their radiodensity (air, fat, water/soft tissue, bone, metal) in radiographs or computed tomography scans.

f. Apply search strategies for various imaging modalities.

g. Select the appropriate window when searching for bony pathology utilizing computed tomography.

h. Understand the properties of various magnetic resonance imaging weights and how that facilities optimal view of anatomy, soft tissue pathology, and bony pathology.

i. Understand what urgency is required when ordering radiologic tests for varying conditions.

j. Utilize a mnemonic to convey a clinical vignette to the radiologist when ordering radiologic test.

Course Schedule:

Introduction and Radiography - 45 min

Computed Tomography - 30 min

Magnetic Resonance Imaging - 30 min

Referral for Imaging - 15 min

Competency Demonstration:  In order to receive continuing education credit, each participant must achieve 70% in a 10-question online quiz after the course (unlimited attempts). If the student fails to achieve 70%, they will be asked to complete additional assignments until remediation is achieved. Once the student achieves this score and completes the course evaluation, a completion certificate will be awarded.
