Introduction to Cannabis, Cannabinoids, & the Endocannabinoid System

Course Description: This 2.5 hour live webinar will introduce you to the most current information about cannabis, cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Cannabis was used and studied as a medicinal herb for many centuries. In the middle of the 20th century when political forces labeled cannabis dangerous, legislators

deemed it illegal. This webinar will highlight the history of cannabis as it relates to therapeutic use and explain the endocannabinoid system, a physiologic system first discovered in 1992. Differentiation will be made between hemp,

marijuana, THC, CBD, and the many other cannabinoids. Our patients and clients are using this medicinal herb in many different preparations and through different modes of administration. At the end of this seminar, the participant

will have tools to help educate patients about the endocannabinoid system and how cannabis interacts with the ECS. This program is a stand-a-lone webinar but it is also complemented by a second 2.5 hour talk titled: The Evidence for Cannabis: What Every Healthcare Practitioner Should Know. In this webinar, the current state of the literature will

be discussed for and against the use of cannabis.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the course, the student will meet the following objectives:

1. Define the terms cannabis, marijuana, recreational/adult use, hemp, cbd, thc, cannabinoids, terpenes

2. Explain the impact of Federal and State regulations on access to medical and adult use cannabis

3. Describe the components of the endocannabinoid system

4. Describe the difference between pharmaceutical, botanical and synthetic cannabis

10-10:15:       Introduction

                         Review of course objectives, agenda, assessment scheme

10:15-11:30: Cannabis history

                         Differentiation between cannabis, marijuana and hemp

                         THC, CBD and minor cannabinoids

                         Full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate – the entourage effect

                         Federal vs State Regulations

11:30 – 12:15: The Endocannabinoid System

                           Endogenous cannabinoids, Receptors

12:15 – 12:30 Q&A

Competency Demonstration: For participants completing the course for CEU credit, the course will contain the following assessments. Each student must obtain at least 70 points overall in order to pass the course. If the student fails to achieve 70 points throughout the course, they will be asked to complete additional assignments until remediation is achieved.
